Material Care, 2025
VCA Artspace
My process included collecting and caring for discarded materials. From metal to wool, textiles and other found objects. In the process of tending to the material I am shown new things, such as the sweet resonance the metal sings when hit with bronze and the beautiful graduation of rust forming on the iron spiral’s interior.
Guided by the shapes and sounds of the found materials, I have arranged an abstract sculpture to give new life and form. With the textiles I knit intuitively and watch as patterns take shape and colours changes are called to my hands.
I am interested in revealing the strength of the knitted weave and activate the work by creating this sensation of tensions through a performance. Performed on opening night, I moved between the metal sculpture and the floating knit spiral and connected the two works. The performance demonstrates the features and resilience of the knit by placing the metal piece into small openings in the textiles. The metal is drawn down with gravity and reveals the strength of knitting whilst creating a moment of suspense as it holds and the sound is activated..
